If you're going to install a new client anyway, I propose to go for the newest version which has full PHost4 support included: http://www.phost.de/~stefan/vpa/vpa-3.63-beta3.zip

If it were FLAK?
FLAK's still a beta. I wouldn't want to run a game in that unless everyone knew what they were getting into.
From my own experience (playing around with it a bit locally) the Beta of FLAK is at least as good as the "stable" releases of the former two...

Or... If I return the Mac and if I can get a PC with a 32 bit version of Vista - will I be able to load Winplan? Will Vista upgrade itself to 64 bit with the first automatic upgrade? This is starting to drive me nuts.... Well... install Windows Vista or XP on your Mac using Bootcamp (or parallel's ...

However, the difference in the races strength isn't very big, the players skill is much more important factor. I have a similar POV: #1: Player skill (no particular order) ... 1a: diplomacy ... 1b: economy ... 1c: military #2: Starting conditions #3: Race Well, given 1000 games, I think the differe...

Concerning race balance this statistic of nearly 1000 games may be interesting. It comprises (moslty) thost games before 2005:

That clearly shows that races 4 and 7 perform worst and 2,5 and 6 best.

Were mines already meantioned? That said, throw a few more mines. And don't forget about minefields ;) Sometimes it may also be helpful, if you tow your own ships. If you win the tow (PHost) or have the lower ID of the tower, you move first. Over your own planets use beamup fuel. Never fly into orbi...

Does anyone know how I can modify the data that VPA shows me about a world that my RST file hasn't shown me yet? IIRC VPA has somewhere a function which allows transmission of information of objects to other races via ingame messages. Of course this is only feasable, if both people use VPA and if y...

Well to make it simpler I only play Timhost games for a start. I do take your point that the smaller the travel the less of a different will happen between what the ship says and what host thinks. (and I was not thinking about a warp well but that is also a good point) VPA and PCC have 100% correct...

Hi, My idea of a buddy program was because i don't know how to start as well as the others. And i'm not sure what to do in the begining. the first turns till the ship limit are indeed the hardes - and given my playing style also the most time consuming: I want to get going as fast as possible, grabb...

Not true for ship allies in phost 8)

(chunneling) Rules for chunneling are simple: Place where everything ends up: Target Firecloud (all conditions must apply): warp 0 not subject to tow at least 1kT of fuel Place where (nearly) everything leaves: Chunneling Firecloud (all conditions must apply): warp 0 FC = id(target firecloud) not s...

planet number is fairer, considering the different arsenal of the races.
That said, I'm fighting now already for 175 turns for planet number supremacy (goal: >160 of 500 planets for 10 turns) ... it can take very long.

HYP-warpwells are 2x2, the normal warpwell is 3ly (not exactly... diagonal ist is just 2x1,41ly). That means you can jump to 1000x1003 if the planet is a t 1000x1000 and There may be differences between thost and phost. In all phost/plist games I play the warp well is squarely 2x2 around the planet...

Re: Hyperjumping and warp wells

Is it possible to hyperjump into warpwells? Yes, but with the effect you described: you'll get sucked into the planetary orbit. Normally it should suffice to jump to a place 1LY out of the warp well and subsequently fly with w1 into the warp well the next round. That way you're most likely also not...
