Getting closer to your neighbor

I noticed in the news that last week New Zealand is inching (actually, it was 12 inches or 30 centimeters) closer to their neighbor, Australia and it also got a little bit bigger.

It was caused by an earthquake.

Hmmm, I wonder what could have caused that earthquake, any ideas?

I think plate tectonics was entirely at fault.

It was a fairly powerful quake, but hit in a virtually-unpopulated area, so no reports of casualties and minimal damage. It was felt up to about 800km away from the epicentre, and was felt by myself and my wife a the time. Caused a tidal wave of 17cm apparently. :?

The east coast of Australia was given a tsunami warning. The terrifying wave massed an imposing height of 8 inches...

So, are saying that even with the help of a 7.8 earthquake, nothing of any significance comes from New Zealand?

Tidal wave or not, New Zealand exports include dairy products, meat, wood, fish, and machinery. With tourism and entertainment included, exports add up to 29.2 billion USD - which is pretty good for a work force of 2.1 million.

Some of my most enjoyed movies have been filmed there; The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Witch, the Wardrobe, and the Lion.
