Smaller Maps program

Does anyone recall the name of the program that made the smaller maps used in personal battles... say 150 to 200 stars? Thanks.

I don't know which program made the maps you're referring to, but those claim to be able to generate appropriate maps:

- New_map 2.2 (new_m220.zip)
- AMaster 3.9d or later using the "PlanetsNumber" option

I have New Map... I think there may be a old website for this program still online. Seems to me I ran across it recently but apparently failed to bookmark it.

I guess I got it from the old FU Berlin site (R.I.P.).

I've got a copy of the whole FU Berlin site and a number of other old planets FTP archives, a few hundred megs in total. So if you want something old^Wmature, chances are I have it. In 2006, I mailed this thing to someone who runs a FTP server; that server has unfortunately gone away now, too. I'm not sure what I'll do with it.

You know I think I have that archive myself. There's a ton of stuff in the CM FTP. Dunno if you've ever looked in there or not. There's probably some undiscovered tidbits there.

However, in the interest of having as complete of a VGA Planets archive as possible I would definitely be interested in your copy if you want to upload it in the Incoming area.

Yeah I have all their stuff. :) When I find the program I'll post the name and link. I know it's still out there on the Web somewhere.

Found it among the hundreds of icons on my XP desktop. Need to clean that off soon.

The program is called Small Maps.

Here's a screen shot from the zip file.

Image

SMap 1.1 32-Bit Version WIN95
Small Maps for VGA-Planets

SMap is a utility for VGA-Planets that creates maps (XYPLAN.DAT) with lesser than 500 planets.

So it is possible to start Duel-Games, where only 2 player are fighting for the universe.
Also it´s useful for great tournaments like championships.

example settings:

1. Duel-Tournament
16 players are divided in 8 groups.
8 different small maps with 25 planets.
The winners should be found at turn 30-40.
Then the quarterfinals begin with the 8 winners.
The small maps make it possible to play 3 turns a week.
So the whole Duel-Tournament including the final rounds can be played in
only 4 * 3 months.

2. Championship
The main problem for managing a championship was the very long time to play
till the finals begin.
Not with smaller maps.
121 players are divided in 11 groups.
They are playing a map with 100 or 250 planets and short distance.
Whatever scoring program may be used, the winners should be found at turn
60-70. (best scoring program for a championship is Telscore by the same author)
The smaller map can be played 2-3 turns a week.
After 4-6 months the final game with the winner starts.

How to install the new map

Make an own directory for SMap.
You need only SMap.exe and Win95.

SMap generates a file XYPLAN.DAT in the same directory where SMap.exe exists.

Be sure you have a backup of your original xyplan.dat.

If you want to master a new game with this map, copy the generated XYPLAN.DAT into your planets- and newgame-directory over the existing xyplan.dat.
If you are hosting also games with standard maps, then you must! create an own
planets- and game-directory.

If you are a player who want to play with the newmap-RST-File, you have to copy the
xyplan.dat into your planets- and your gamedirectory before! you unpack your rst.

If you are playing with winplan 3.5 you have only to copy the xyplan.dat into your
vpworkX-directory.

SMap 1.1 is Freeware and be copied but not modified!
You use SMap at your own risk.

Having fun

I have used a programme called SMap by Helmut Elit and Claudia Schwarz.

Best wishes

When my two current games are finished I would be interested in playing in a tournament.

I think a team tournament would be good if it can be done. Teams of two vs each other and progress through the rounds as normal with the best pair winning in the end.

Is this possible?

Site redesign. Power Games. One x One battles. Slight integration with Donovan's. One day hopefully a winning lottery ticket...

If you can come up with some fast & furious concepts where games
can end in 2-3 months, (obviously small maps & low player count),
then I'd be very interested.

I'm weary of long games.

RL has become crazy busy for me and VGAP without the time sink
and long term obligation would be great!

I'm with Bane!
long games can be a pain, especially because you have to do more and more the bigger you are.

I'd love to see a game with 250 - 300 planets and the same ship limit. If that is possible I would be the first one to join.

...not to mention that such games also makes smaller ships more important.
