The centre of Yasi hit land at a small town called Mission Beach at about midnight last night.

There are reports that there is extensive damage there and in surrounding centres like Tully. Early reports are that 90% of the central district of Tully is destroyed.
Yasi has been downgraded to a level 3 several hours after hitting land but there are many centres inland, that don't normally get cyclones due to their location, who are preparing for Yasi to come blowing through.

The best news at this time is that there does not appear to be any deaths or serious injuries as a result of last night's storm. This may change but so far it is great news.

We are being told that winds were just short of 300km/h. Lots of stories from survivors talking about how terrifying it was to sit through for hours just waiting for it to pass.
