towing a cloaked allied ship

Hi

Jeopardy: Cloaking $500

I know that you can tow ships that are cloaked. But what if two cloaked ships (different races but they are allied) meet somewhere in deep space... can the cloaked ship towlock the other cloaked allied ship assuming there is a strong alliance (FFx) of course.

I have to know that to be sure that nobody is playing such tricks on me.

uhm? do you mean you can tow cloaked ships (YES) but only if they uncloak and cloak again in the same turn you lock the towbeam? (that would be the NO to the question if a ship can tow a ship that is cloaked but visible due to the strong alliance).

Or does yes and no just mean that you don't know it? :)

And ok ok... I think it's a cloaking $1000 question

The answer is yes and no, dependent upon the hconfig and
the client you're using.

In VPA regardless of the alliance setting, if you have an ally's RST,
AND the hconfig allows "VPA extra features = YES" then you can
tow a cloaked ally's ship regardless of its' cloaked status.

If VPA extra features is turned off, then I don't believe you're able.

As for Winplan, IIRC, it needs to be allied.

As for Dosplan, IIRC, not possible regardless of settings.

Other clients? Dunno.

1. How can a cloak ship tow another ship? Once you try change your mission, you are no longer cloaked.
2. In TimHost, it is possible to tow a cloaked ship, as long as the ship is not cloaked when the tow-order is given, i.e. when the towbeam is locked. In PHost, you must see the towee to set this mission. You can only tow a cloaked ship if you see it (that is, if it's yours, or if its owner offered you a ship-level alliance).

Info is from PHost docs and Donovan's.

I hope this helps.

Mika, you should trust me more...

I just checked 'All the Marbles'. There is a cloaked resolute of mine (pretty sure it was cloaked the turn before) and you can set tow mission on it with a Victorious of yours. If you want me to, I can dig for the rst itself.

Yeah, I know how it is but Tim designed the the game so that a ship can select only one mission per turn.

Ah... that brings up a pre v3.2x host bug memory.

The true cloaked intercept bug!
It used to be that in dosplan and v3.1x, you could set your ship to
intercept and cloak and both missions would take place.

It used to drive folks nuts wondering how the heck cloakers were
pulling their fleets apart.

It was especially nasty in the hands of the pirate.
He'd cloak intercept ships in the open & rob them next turn in open space.

wait... let me see if I can find my old dosplan. You can have it.

Now you just need a game that runs with a version of timhost that is around 10 years old :)

and then find players!
to continue with old things... ever heard of the NUK-trap?
THAT was a viscius thing
