Ion Storms

In a basic VGA game what true signifigance do ion storms have. What are things to watch out for and what advantages can be had? avoid 'em ? fly thru 'em ? what 'experience' is gained? and when would that matter.? So many Questions and such a slow typer......

You don't actually get experience by being in an ion storm -- you get experience by flying around & being in combat, etc. That experience can help you survive stronger ion storms, but that's really all it's good for (doesn't help you combat odds or anything else). (Yes Cherek, I will point out that I'm talking about a standard Tim-host game, NOT PHost :P )

These are the main effects of a storm (see Donovan's for more info):
  • Most cloaking system will fail when within any ion storm. The 2 exceptions to this are the Dark Wing & Resolute battleships. This is a definite disadvantage to cloaking races (nothing like an ion storm hovering over your enemy's area, making it impossible to sneak attack!), except for the Birds. Having Resolutes & Dark Wings hiding in an ion storm can be quite effective, given their immunity to all ion storm effects. If you're fighting a cloaking race (especially Privateers or Lizards, and Fascists to a lesser extent), a slow-moving ion storm lingering over their area is like a big "attack now!" sign :)
  • Dragging - class 4 & 5 storms will drag starships along with them, at 75% of the storm's speed (again, with the exception of the Resolute & Dark Wing -- but only when they're cloaked!)
  • Damage - class 4 & 5 storms can kill crew & damage ships caught within them (this is where experience can play a factor). Ships' shields will also be rendered inoperative when in one of these levels storms (yep, you guessed it -- again, this doesn't apply to the Resolute or Dark Wing WHEN CLOAKED)
  • Minefield hiding - enemy minefields whose centerpoint is covered by a storm cannot be detected or swept, with the expection of if you're the Colonial player, who can sweep fields covered by storms. This leads to strategies like flying along inside a storm towards enemy territory, laying mines if he comes out towards you (he can't see or sweep them, but certainly can HIT them!). This is also one case where an ion storm over your area can be a plus, provided it's not too strong and you don't care about cloaking -- if you're under attack, you can pop some fields in the storm which can't be seen or swept by incoming attackers (until the storm moves on, of course). Both of those strategies are particularly effective if you're playing as the Birds, since you can lay mines & recloak within the storm using the Resolute or Darkwings.

not much to add.

be very weary if an ion storm moves into you direction and the crystal is involved. some very large weak ion storms do not cause trouble unless they cover a couple of unsweepable webs. this can get VERY ugly!

and one more thing: ion storms can join if they overlap one of their centers. they will then move into the direction of the stronger storm and size and speed and power will be recalculated. again, this can be very bad.
have fun!

As a Klingon specialist I'd like to go on record as saying I hate Ion storms.

The first time I played the Privateers I ended up w/ a huge, slow storm smack over my opponent's territory... THAT will bring you to a standstill (for some reason he didn't let me rob him while uncloaked! :D )

The first bad encuonter I had was actually as a Fed, when a bunch of terraformers went drifting out and a couple blew up, and some small warships waiting for refit took damage all in the same turn. I pay closer attention now (although I recently screwed up and took some damage to a LDSF)....

At NAVGAP most games didn't have ion storms.

I hate ion storms.

Cloaking races hate them more. Takes out your cloak and hides the minefields. Not good news.....

See, now, responding to this kind of slander is the sort of thing that pumps up your post count, just like I was talking about... ah dammit. ](*,)
