Strategy hints

I noted that many players ignore the most basics strategic rules. I would like to suggest several very simple, proved hints. Follow them, and you'll do better next game. I'm sure you can find it all on strategic section of this site, but it appears not everyone looks there.
1. Never build Small and Medium Freighters. For the price of 2 MDSF you can have 1 LDSF with triple capacity. Small one is a joke.
2. Never build any engines other than W1 (for Merlins, Refineries, fighters factory, some Heavy Carriers etc) and W9 engines. There are some possible exceptions, but not many.
3. Never tax colonists, except HW, and even on HW - only with "growing" method. If you don't know what "growing" method is, ask me.
4. Learn when one should use "growing" method of taxation on Natives, and try to use it when appropriate
5. The only torps you should build are Mark4 (only very early in the game, but better not at all), Mark7 and Mark8. Mark7 almost always is a better deal, unless you have plenty of cash and poor minerals at the beginning of the game (Feds?). Make a decision Mark7/Mark8 early and build only one type of torps.

Nice SS.
I however have found a nice market for MDSF (And very early game SDSF) when using the Teleport addon.

With Teleport the bulk of your shipments are done using Starbases, so I lean to build more SB than normal. 2 MDSF doing supply runs to these extra SB work very well, where I have found I cannot fill a LDSF.

I like and dislike Teleport.

I was able to do some brutal economic & defensive base expansion
in the last SFB game I played. It enabled me to solve location problems
and I was able to base expand almost as fast as I was taking territory.

That's both good and bad.

With that kind of fast defensive expansion, it forces an invader to
cough up potentially one heavy warship per planet.

While that is expected late game, it isn't good for the game when that
can be done so early.

Better than using GivePlan to bring a dead race back to life. :)

Giveplan = Evil

And I won't be running another game with it. Nice trick though. :)

I resemble that remark! O:)

And for the record, it wasn't just one dead race, it was three. I used the Tholian to lay mines, the Maquis to build fighters, and turned SBs over the Gorn when it was obvious they were about to be attacked.

It was a great game to be a Romulan!

I mean, that way of playing works for most races, but since the birds need more cash than most other races, there must be a way to increase the income for them...right?

wasp,

Can you describe your general first 10 turns of builds?
