To explain why I think 3rd start spot is best:

In the first, T4 faces cloakers, lokis, glories, botmines & ftr sweep.
Their only defense is webs.

In the second, T4 faces Both Lokis, cloakers, glories, darksense
and borg massive planets. IMO, #2 is worst setup.

In the third, T4 faces no early cloakers thus forcing their main enemies
to move all in the open thus balancing the playing field some.

After a bit of thought, I would change the setup as follows:
Turn the field and place all teams into one of the quadrants.
Allow teams to choose their homeworld locations with initial buffer
zones that would be offlimits to homeworld placement
............
.T1...T2.
............
.T3...T4.
............
This will stretch out the distances so that an early kill would be
unlikely and it allows economies to become more established.

who is getting the additional HW? crystal or priv - admit it, you only want to see them collapse over intern disputes :P

I would substitute EE for the Bots, should make for a little better balance, big minefields versus the ability to sweep them away and keeps all the make fighter capabilities from one team. Team 4 should hold their own as it's my experience that the Priv's greatest enemy is the Crystals and I would be in as well.

Team 3 should just build Rushes for fighting........ they always fight well above their station in life :roll:

Team 2 is the Dream team......
Borg and EE pumping out cubes and gorbies the feds refit,
Borg assimilating so far and giving the planets to the fed for mega $
Lokis make the privs useless
Fireclouds chunnel fleets into webs and sweep them away
Fed owned cubes and gorbies will take anything out.
Their economy means they can blow away the robots minefields

Team 4 will always be cannon fodder.

True enough about Loki's and privs problem is you need Loki's all over the place and once ship limit is reached then what, but I agree in this type of game team 4 would be out manned and out gunned. I say drop them.

Only problem with dropping T4 is that it paves the way for team 2
to run away with the game.
