Planet count doesn't skew the game in favor of a cloaking race...
All races in the proposed tournament can cloak.

I like the number of planets options, but only if the game map is small enough that the combat is intense. Also, I think that sticky mines have to not be allowed for a 1 on 1 ladder game. Slowing the game down to a crawl might not be a good idea!

To speed things up, take the planets, ship & mine limit down to 80.
80*8000 = 640,000
sqrt (640,000) = 800x800 LY map.

That should make things pretty hot & heavy.
If the map is wrapped, the max distance between HWs is roughly 400 LY.
(make that 600 if both were in opposite corners)

thots?

Yes, yes - but how boring that would be. Honestly, the logic that 'if a race gets ahead on tonnage' they just sit back doesn't fly with me. The same logic can be said if a race gets ahead of another with planet number, wouldn't you say? The games are short - and the goal should be to fight. Not set up casinos on planets.

You say planet number, I say tonnage, so maybe meet in the middle with a score that combines all of that... mmmm. maybe we could call it something like..i don' tknow...'ITA score'???

Anyway, it's good to chew the fat about it.

Nice hyping distance at 400ly - 600ly would be much better. I reckon the fatest way to decide this would be for someone to have a crack at a quick fire game and see how it pans out. I like your ship and mine limit idea.

The way I download my xyplan.dat files - yes they can.

But seriously... planet no. is just boring. What empire every won a battle on the basis of 'at the end of the conflict we had more cities than you...'. Or, if the US and chinese fight a conventional war, at the end the chinese are likely to be able to say 'we have more ppl left alive in china than there are in the US - we won'.

It's more about who breaks whose fleet. If som, eone gets the ascendency, and decides to rack off, then you will just have to go after them. I had the opposite problem in GRT where I had some enemies run away from me becaues they didn't want to see me get more tonnage (you know who you are! )

Also - tonnage can change very, very quickly. If I am ahead, I do not desist - I push home to gain the ascendency, and claim the enemies resources for my own. I do not believe you can just sit back, or cede territory. Ok, anyway, enough from me on this.

I think Cardno is full of crap and agree with Bane. I have hacked into Cardno's account and will continue to wreak havoc upon his posts.

I cannot reveal my identity, but will say...

planet number is fairer, considering the different arsenal of the races.
That said, I'm fighting now already for 175 turns for planet number supremacy (goal: >160 of 500 planets for 10 turns) ... it can take very long.

Just my 2ct

That's why with a 50 turn limit and a 2 man game, I think something
like 80 planets, 80 ships & 80 mines in an 800x800 map would work
to fulfill a fast game desire.

Get the planets, fight for the planets.
To hold planets, one has to commit ships or clans.

Ships on the other hand can hide in warp wells ad nauseum.
Planets cannot hide.

Bane, we're expecting a few nice tournament maps for this :)

If we have at least 3 or so to randomly use, then it would be nice. I remember that RCWorld had something similar (maps) in their tournament (Civil Wars or something like that?) many years ago (2004/2005)

With regards to planets vs tons, I think both are very good options for a tournament of this kind. Both have weakness & strengths, although a planet count could be an interesting change to UnNatural Selection.

Out of interest - how long do ppl think it takes to build a race?

Is there anyway we can commence this prior to the whole thing kicking off? Be great to be able to get started on that when one has the odd free hour.
