I think the most fun I had was in an old tournament we called "Gen Wars".

While not applicable here, we had all the hot shots divide themselves up by age... - 20, 21-30, 31-40, 40+. After listening to the those most full of themselves, it went 20 v 40+, 21+ v 31+, winners v winners, losers v losers.

Trying to remember racial layout....I remember we used custom map, players selected hw placement. Pretty sure Privies were out and Chunnel was off.

was a long time ago, but was a lot of fun. I know of at least three others on the board that were in that game.
been there, done that...

You would need a special group for those under 5 mentally.

You would also need a couple of new categories on the upper end of that scale now... 40-49, 50-59, 60+... :D

I'd join the grandpa category

An idea to throw into the ring.

What about leveling the playing field a bit?

Phost, PList 3.2 with experience enabled?

With all the changes relative to the default ship list and host vs phost,
regardless of game experience of the players here, such a setup will
mess up the player's routines.

That could work. I like some big team games, I haven't seen on in a while nor have I seen a 5 teams of 2 game in a while either. Those games are a little easier to get going too, as less people involved in making a team of 5.

Bother that All the Marbles 2 or 3 didn't get working properly.
5 teams of 2 in that setup was cool.

Idea(s) for a future team game:

2 Teams of 5:
With Neutral Zone Map.
or
5 Teams of 2:
With Monkey Cluster

Add ons:
Orbiter
Home World Full Kill

The rest, a relatively normal master.

How about the 2 Teams of 5 being a phost game with 750 shiplimit?

TBH, I think more than 500 ships creates more problems
than it solves.

Past winners isn't much of a guide as to who are the best players. Seems to me that most players here have a definite favorite race, with possibly a second and rarely a third.

In my case i can have a blast with the Borg, but suck totally with the Birds/Privateers/Klingon just to mention a few.

Seems to me it would be better to have players nominate their best race, have say Havok choose race groups and throw them in and see if they can work together. If you have several nominate for the same race, Havok can draw straws :).

Just a thought.

I think you are more likely to get 5 teams of two that work together effectively for the long haul. Teams of five start off as a good idea but rarely do you get 5 players who work efficiently together and last the whole game.

The last 5vs5 game I was in was at The Last Domain website when that still existed. It was fun, but not that much. 5 teams of 2 is a better option imo.

I played in the Marbles game. The setup was really nice, and our opponents were really, really stupid in selecting their race combos.

I think we ended up with lizard/fascist, borg/robot, empire/fed and Mika and me was our dreamcombo, bird/xtal. We took and held the upper marble from fed/empire and made them drop. We took the middle marble and forced robot/bot to colonise some of their carriers so that we would not get them, and grabbed a few more.

The game ended with some name calling from the borg/robots over the Q taking over fed/empire.

The last 5on5 I played, I ended up as feds. Terrible, terrible turns in the later stages, having to hold our 3 beachheads with a handfull of carriers, always making sure the lokis were in place and safe, and that poppers would not totally ruin our day.

Screenshot from the last turn of marbles I have:
