Dare I say it?

Want a VGA Planets game with custom settings? Have an idea for a tournament? Post it here.

The VGAP Master.exe program likes to run in full screen mode (DOS) and there is no DOS in Vista (Windows 6.0) and Windows 7 (Windows 6.1).

So while everything else is running beautifully in Win7 32bit... I can basically only create a game in AMaster.

I don't want to convert everything over to a Virtual Machine, but that may be (for simplicity's sake) the only thing I can do.

More later.

I haven't had any problems running Win7 64 in XP mode just so that I can run WinPlan and three other programs that don't like 64 bit.

You know this may be just me, but the Virtual PC XP mode I have setup on the server (Win 7 Pro 32bit) doesn't feel or respond like the Virtual PC 2007 I had installed in Vista. I found Vista's Virtual PC to be more true to XP than Win7's XP Mode. I can't put my finger quite on it, but the behavior is different.

Time will tell though. I have some experimenting to do.

Try sluggish or slow response.

I haven't tried setting the Virtual PC yet (just haven't gotten round to it yet). XP mode came with the 64bit so I loaded it up and transferred all my VGA Planets stuff to it so I wouldn't miss any turns.

FYI, if I were to play the Maquis, I would play them as is from the
diplomatic angle. I don't want them nor the Ferengi militarily equal.
Every race equal makes for a boring game.

I can see how to play the Maquis. I just don't know how I could work
the Ferengi because from my POV, they have nothing to offer anyone
in the diplomacy/trade department. I just see them as doormat.

So...

I'll have to brainstorm with Klauser when he works on AQ again on
some ideas that might work within the Ferengi flavor. I have a few
ideas I'll throw his way but it requires that I more accurately acquaint
myself with the AQ list.

As Klauser is tied down with family demands, I wait for him.

FTR, right now, I am not looking to get into an host.exe game.

Klauser,

Options for your consideration and for others to see where my
thoughts on Ferengi have gone:

#1: Take away all super cargo transports from all except Ferengi.
Want more freight? Talk to the Ferengi.

#2: Take away all super fighter transports from all races.
Replace with a Sagittarius class vessel with 200 cargo.
Want more mobile fighters? Talk to the Ferengi.

#3: Give an 800 cargo 1 engine Gemini class vessel to the Ferengi only.
It IS the fighter factory in the galaxy. BUT, Ferengi get no warship
bigger than a Patriot as a carrier vessel. They can build them, but
they cannot offensively deploy them.
Want more Fighters? Talk to the Ferengi.

#4: Free Fighters = Yes for Ferengi.

#5: Give a 0/1 torper 900 cargo transport to the Ferengi.
Even in Cardassian hands, the 75LY minefield ensures that the
galaxy isn't covered in minefields.
Want to build torpedoes? Talk to the Ferengi.

#6: Decrease top Ferengi warship from an 8/8 to a 3/8 torper.
Make sure no Ferengi warship has more than 6 beams.
This makes Ferengi weak against minefields and webs.

#7: Make Ferengi warships unusually susceptible to Tow kills.
ie: Give their warships one engine and make the hulls more costly.
Not only do the Ferengi suffer from towkills, they cannot build a
cheap sacrificial lamb towed by a good warship.

iffy #8 200% tax?
iffy #9 200% mine?

This makes the Ferengi:
The ultimate freight mover,
The ultimate arms merchant,
Comparable militarily to the Maquis,
Weak militarily relative to the rest.
The rest have needs, the Ferengi can supply them.

This brings the Ferengi into the game diplomatically where everyone
will want what the Ferengi can provide.

Ah screw it . . .

Unless someone else desperately wants to play in this game I could probably give the Ferengi a go. The AQ scenario has always interested me. Maybe I don't know jack but their shiplist doesn't look too bad. 8/8 torper? 600 kt? Nothing wrong with that. Four engines is a bit on the expensive side, but oh well. . . they get tax bonuses and the luxury liner (which is of dubious utility but anyway) so should cover the additional cost.

They still have RGA and ATT/NUK immunity, plus enough money to buy the fighters their starbases don't produce. Might be hard taking down the heavy carriers but will have to think of some task forces to put together, obviously involving that carrier. If the Lizards can make do with the Madonzilla don't see why the Ferengi can't do the same with a similar ship (in terms of bays anyway)

Ladies and Gents,

Looks like the dance card is full! Based on discussions here and in Kaiser's Sacrilege thread, here's how the line up looks:

Raven2 - Federation
FLETCH - Gorn
Logain - Romulans
Gilgamesh - Klingons
Kaiser - Orions
Cardno - Borg
Shardin5 - Tholians
Gavan - Dominion
Hawkeye - Cardassians
Akshamu - Maquis
Akalabeth - Ferengi

Any objections or second thoughts? If not, we await Havok's good will and grace to stake out a corner of the server for our fun and games.

Not a bad line up.

A couple of surprises.

I wait with baited breath...

To make things easier for all concerned, I'll run with the Cardassians in their current guise 8)
