Gaming preferences. Swith race?

Hi,

As regards VGAP, I am usually conservative. I do not like playing most addons available for VGAP (much less PHOST!) nor alternative ship lists. I do not mind addons like "sphere", though.

I like high quality games. I would gladly join vanilla ("no frills") games with experienced, reliable and highly competitive players. I have no fun when I win against non-commited newbie players, who misses 1 out of every 2 turns. In this regard, I think a ranking system might be useful to indicate how reliable and able a given player is.

One addon that called my attention in the past was "switch race". It allows more than one player to have the same race in the same game (for instance, you can have 3 players as the colony of man in the same game). In this way, every player can have the race he prefers.

Does anyone know whether switch race is compatible with the latest THOST? If is is, I suggest we set up a game with switch race. It should be a game for experienced players, I believe.

SRace was IIRC a specific version of THost designed to
allow such scenarios.

For some reason SRace never really caught on with the majority
of the VGAP community.

I suspect if most games were SRace, we'd see less of a rush to get
a particular favorite race. Instead, folks would join, pick the race they
wanted and the game would fill up. It might be interesting to see such.

Yep, thought so.

Ugh... now I remember the other reason it didn't catch on.
Something of a nuisance.

Phost can do the samething and a host can tweak it to mimic THost and you wouldn't need a add-on then.

It should be since it works with Host 3.22.

I have played one game in the past (Compuserve) with switch race and I can't remember what nuisance it was ... apart from the fact that mission 1 was in fact mission 9 and mission 9 was the race specific mission (or something like that).

What I like about switch race is the fact that it allows everybody to play with their prefered race. Besides, it stops the usual complain "I lost because my race sucks...". It is even more fun when you start the game without knowledge of other players choice...

I've played in a PHost game that have two Privateer and I think it also had two Feds. There has also been talk about a 'All Privateer Game."

Now let me ask a couple of questions.

I've never used SRACE or even played in a game supporting it...

But after reading the docs, I'm under the assumption that if used, it would have to be the same race for everyone? So it would be an all Lizard game, or an all Robot game...etc....

Can someone give me a little more info on it?
Best Regards,

Joe

][avoc,

As I'm reading it...
The Host runs Srace.exe and designates the various races to
each slot, creating the appropriate files (Friday.hst etc)

I think it allows multiple of same race in same game and not just
all feds/all liz etc.

My interest in an Srace game is piqued a bit.

Does it mention how it gets around the custom slots? For example, cloaking ships, grav accelerators...etc..

No, that's not the case. The game I played had different races. In fact, any combination of races is possible. There is only a minor glitch in the ship missions (they work, but they read different).

Ok, just got some preliminary fiddling done.

Any combination of races is possible.
It's not much work at all for the host.
It's a bit more for the players.
If players use VPA it's easier.

Just follow the documentation and it works.

Going to pull that apart in just a few...

I'll be downloading the latest host and see if it works with
latest or not.

Seems to work with latest host.
