STAR FLEET BATTLES
Notes

This mod is a based on the FEDERATION AND EMPIRE (FEDEMP) scenario Mark Satchell and I built for VGA Planets back in 1995.

While FEDEMP was an attempt to simulate the FEDERATION AND EMPIRE boardgame using the VGA Planets game engine - it included not only modified races and ships, but also included a custom map, starnames and starting fleets based on the starting setup in the FEDEMP boardgame.

STAR FLEET BATTLES (SFB) is a smaller mod intended for "start-from-scratch" games, using only modified race and ship data. While most of the races and ships are similar to FEDEMP, they are designed with stand-alone play in mind.

Since some of the races in SFB are different then the ones used in standard VGA PLANETS games, it is important to keep in mind which race has what special abilities (race abilities). We made sure the races that were the "same" as VGAP races (FED, GORN, ROMULANS, KLINGONS, etc ) stayed in there original race slot. These are the SFB race assignements with thier race abilities...

Player 1 - The United Federation of Planets
April 2007

The Federation is a representative government of several spacefaring races, including Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, Tellarite and many other sentient races. But make no mistake, this is the "Jim Kirk - I'm here to kick butt" Federation, not the "Jean-Luc Picard - touchy feely" Federation. The Federation's major strengths are its versatile, robust economy - and a well balanced Star Fleet.

SHIP CLASSES OF NOTE:

Class H Freighter/Terraformer - When in orbit over a planet, this frieghter will make planets warmer until climate type 50 is reached.

Class C Freighter/Terraformer  - When in orbit over a planet, this frieghter will make planets cooler until climate type 50 is reached.

Luxury Liner - The Luxury Liner is a star-faring casino designed to provide the highest level of comfort and entertainment.  It is also a tremendous money-maker.   When there are clans on board this starship it will generate one megacredit per clan on board from gambling earnings.

Large Alchemy Ship - The Large Alchemy ship has a Merlin Alchemy Device, which can convert supply units into minerals.

Bioscan -The CONSTITUTION Class Heavy Cruiser has special "BioScan" equipment installed capable of detecting native life on other planets. If the CONSTITUTION's  mission is sensor sweep this ability will be activated. The range of the native life detecting is the same as the sensor sweep range. The bio scanner on the CONSTITUTION  is be able to lock onto about 20% of all planets in range per turn. The BioScan will not tell you which race, if any, owns the planet. If a planet has twenty or more defense outposts, that planet will shield a planet from BioScan. 

LOKI Anti-Cloak - The KEARSARGE Class New Light Cruisers  have a LOKI Cloak Deactivation Device. The KEARSARGE emits a tachyon pulse that causes all cloaked ships within 10 light years of its' position to come out of cloak. Cloaked ships within 10 LY of a KEARSARGE before or after the ship movement phase will uncloak. Cloaked Federation and Gorn ships are completely immune to the effects of the KEARSARGE. The KEARSARGE must have fuel and less than 20 points of damage in order to decloak enemy ships.

Alchemy Freighter - The advanced alchemy freighter will convert minerals into Neutronium at a rate of one unit of fuel per unit of any mineral that in placed in the starships cargo holds. This process requires neither supplies or megacredits to be performed. The only way to prevent the alchemy process from occurring is to have the starships fuel tanks full. If the tank is less than full the starship will convert enough minerals to fill it until it runs out of minerals.


Player 2 - The Gorn Confederation
April 2007

The Gorn Confederation consists of three sentient reptilian races descended from a common stock who have formed a single political unit. Large stature, high intelligence, and green scales are traits of the Gorn.  Non-aggressive by nature, they posses a temperment that runs to an icey exactness when angered. Being the focus of this anger has been described as "unpleasant."  Their starships are built like the Gorn themselves, big and strong and built to last.

Cloaking Ships -  The Gorn modified captured Romulan cloaking technology and installed it as standard equipment on their  RAPTOR Class Frigates and STEGOSAUR Class War Cruisers.  Gorn cloaking devices are immune to the effects of the Federation LOKI Decloaking Device.

Player 3 - The Romulan Star Empire
April 2007

 Romulans are distant relatives to Vulcans. In every other way, they are drastically different. Aggressive and passionate by nature, their culture places a high value on discipline and cunning. Romulan leaders are long-rang strategic thinkers, planning several moves ahead (and behind, to the right,....). While held back in the past by a technologically inferior fleet, The Romulans have modernized by technology transfers, starting with trade arrangements with the Klingons and more recently through development of their own modern starships. This, coupled with their excellent intelligence gathering capability and their wide use of cloaking technology, make them a serious threat. 

 "We are destined to rule the galaxy. It is our birthright - and the natural order of the universe."

Cloaking Ships:  The Romulans have cloaking devices installed on all their warships except the Klingon Tug. 
- Two Romulan ships, the CONDOR Class Dreadnought and the CONDOR-C Class Heavy Carrier have an advanced model of cloaking device - they do not burn any extra fuel to cloak as all other cloaking ships do. This advanced cloaking device also allows these ships to remain cloaked in ion storms. 
- The SWIFTHAWK Class Scout is fitted with advanced "gravitonic cloaking" technology derived from the advanced cloak on the CONDOR Class ships. Placed on this much smaller hull, the SWIFTHAWK's range is effectively doubled.


Player 4 - The Klingon Empire
April 2007

Gold skinned humaniods in appearance, Klingons are aggressive and militaristic. This is the Klingon Empire the way it was MEANT to be!! Treachery and deceit are the name of the game - those ridge-headed honor-bound fools from "Jean-Luc's" Star Trek wouldn't last a second against these guys. Their economy is continually run on a wartime footing because of the firmly held belief that without a strong fleet, they are open to invasion. The Klingon Fleet is a capable, balanced fleet armed with an eye towards swift, decisive actions.

Cloaking Ships:  Three Klingon Warships, the F5 Frigate, D5 War Cruiser, and the D7 Heavy Cruiser, have a Cloaking Device installed.  << The Klingons got cloaking technology from the Romulans in exchange for plans for their older D6 Cruiser designs ... both sides are convinced the Klingons got the much better end of that bargain.>>

Glory Device  - When the Klingons replaced their older D6 Cruisers with the more advanced D7 Heavy Cruiser, the existing DC Cruisers were refitted with a "Glory Device". When the D6 explodes, it does 1 mine hit of damage to all ships at the same point in space. The glory device only does 10% of a mine hit to other Klingon enemy ships at the same location. If the explosion takes place over a planet it can also kill a large number of enemy colonists and natives as well as destroy objects on the ground, such as factories. Siliconoid, Reptiles, Bovinoids are immune to Glory Devices' effects. The Glory Device will kill ALL Amorphous life on a planet that occupies the same point in space as the exploding starship. This will cause all of the Amorphous natives to be converted directly into supplies at a rate of 1 supply unit per 1000 natives.

Imperial Assault - The Klingon B10 Battleship  has a specially designed "Imperial Assault" capablilty - it has mass transporters that can transport huge number of assault troops simultaneously to an enemy planet. To perform an "Imperial Assault" an undamaged B10  needs to drop ten clans on an enemy planet. Once this is accomplished the planet will be captured. The only defense against this is actually damaging the starship before it can drop clans - any damage at all will prevent the "Imperial Assault" from working. This will work against all planets. This starship is immune to the planetary ATT and NUK friendly codes. The assault will destroy all defense outposts.


Player 4 - The Orion Pirates
April 2007

Sworn to fun, loyal to none.... except their crews and their credit balance - the Orions make a great ally, and a VERY nasty enemy. The Orion Pirates are a loose cartel of adventurers, thieves, plunderers and cut-throats. Each of their ships tends to be uniquely armed, but are generally weaker than warships from any other race. While they normally cannot stand toe-to-toe with any other race in a stand-up fight, this is more than made up for by their unique expertise in boarding and capturing ships. So if they can't build have a ship that can hurt you, they'll steal one that CAN !!

Cloaking Devices:  Three Orion warships have cloaking devices.
- The MARAUDER Class Heavy Cruiser
- The CORSAIR and RAIDER Class ships are fitted with advanced "gravitonic cloaking" technology stolen from the Romulan CONDOR and CONDOR-C Class ships.  Placed on these much smaller hulls, the range and effectiveness of the CORSAIR and RAIDER classes are effectively doubled.


Player 6 - The Andromedan Raiders
April 2007

The Andromedans are from another galaxy - the nearby (in galactic terms!) M-31 "Andromedan" galaxy. Keeping their true appearance hidden by using robotic servants, the Andromedans plan is to annex and settle OUR galaxy. With colony ships already on the way, suitable habitats must be found and all inhabitants enslaved or 'properly stored' (turned into large sugar cubes) for future 'consumption.'  But all these damn native races keep getting in the way...

Hyperdrive Ships:  Three Andromedan warships have Hyperdrive devices installed: the VIPER Scout, the COBRA Frigate and the PYTHON Destroyer .  To engage the Hyperdrive engines, these ships must have: 
  - at least 50 kt of fuel
  - a waypoint set at least 20 ly from the ship
  - warp set to greater than 0,
  - ship friendly code = "HYP"
The ship will jump about 350 light years, burn 50 units of fuel, and will come out of hyperspace at speed zero and with no waypoint set. The ship does not move through those 350 ly - it is an instantaneous transit from source to destination. While using their hyperdrive engines, these ships are not affected by minefields.

Chunnel - The ISC Batle Tug  has a Tachyon Tunneling, or "Chunnel" device installed on board.  When activated, the Chunnel device generates a Tachyon Tunnel between itself and any other ISC Tug that is at least 100 ly and no more than 5000 ly distant.  When the Tug moves into the Chunnel, it causes the Chunnel to collapse, drawing the Tug (and any other starships that were in the same point in space) along in front of it as it collapses. This movement expends uses no fuel on the Chunneling starship(s), since they are being pushed along by the collapsing Chunnel (subspace temporal rift).


Player 7 - The Tholian Holdfast

The Tholians are an enigmatic crystalline creatures existing on very high temperature worlds. Refugees from their home galaxy, they are the survivors of a once large empire that was destroyed by a galaxy-wide revolt. The Tholians have very isolationist philosopy, and they ferociously defend their territory. Their fleet, while generally inferior to other races, makes wide use of electromagnetic "web" fields that can disable opposing ships. 

"Don't mess with the Holdfast, and the Holdfast won't mess with you.  Trespassers will be violated."

DO NOT EVER mention to either a Lyran or a Kzin that they resemble one another - they have deep-rooted hatred of each other - and failure to remember this rule has cost more than one diplomat an arm or leg ... or life!!

Glory Device - The JAGUAR Class War Cruisers have been refitted with a "Glory Device", similar to the same device on the Klingon D6  Class Cruisers. When detonated, the JAGUAR explodes, doing 1 mine hit of damage to all ships at the same point in space. The glory device only does 20% of a mine hit to other Lyran ships at the same location. If the explosion takes place over a planet it can also kill a large number of enemy colonists and natives as well as destroy objects on the ground, such as factories. Siliconoid, Reptiles, Bovinoids are immune to Glory Devices' effects. The Glory Device will kill ALL Amorphous life on a planet that occupies the same point in space as the exploding starship. This will cause all of the Amorphous natives to be converted directly into supplies at a rate of 1 supply unit per 1000 natives.

Bioscan  -  The TIGER Class Heavy Cruiser has special "BioScan" equipment installed capable of detecting native life on other planets. If the TIGER's mission is sensor sweep this ability will be activated. The range of the native life detecting is the same as the sensor sweep range. The bio scanner on the TIGER is able to lock onto about 20% of all planets in range per turn. The BioScan will not tell you which race, if any, owns the planet. If a planet has twenty or more defense outposts, that planet will shield a planet from BioScan. 

Ram Scoop - The TIGER Class Heavy Cruisers are also equipped with a simple Ram Scoop as a part of its hull design. The Ram Scoop will produce 2 KT of Neutronium per light year traveled by the starship. So if the TIGER traveled ten light years it would generate 20 KT of fuel. So in theory, if it used less than 20 KT of fuel to go that 10 light years the starship would experience a net gain in fuel.


Player 9 - The Interstellar Concordium

The Interstellar Concordium (ISC) is a neutral republic of several powerful races bound by similar beliefs. Individually, the races could be considered minor galactic powers - together they are a significant power.  The ISC Fleet is one of the finest in this part of the galaxy, built specifically to counter threats posed by it's neighbors.  The way the ISC see it, the galaxy contains numerous beligerent races needing discipline, policing, and re-educating on the responsibilities inherent to civilized culture. The ISC has the knowledge and power to enforce such policies, plus the fanatical belief that it is their duty as a mature culture to enlighten those beneath them.

Alchemy Freighter - The advanced alchemy freighter will convert minerals into Neutronium at a rate of one unit of fuel per unit of any mineral that in placed in the starships cargo holds. This process requires neither supplies or megacredits to be performed. The only way to prevent the alchemy process from occurring is to have the starships fuel tanks full. If the tank is less than full the starship will convert enough minerals to fill it until it runs out of minerals.

Player 10 - The Hydran Kingdom
April 2007

Hydrans are short, barrel shaped, trilaterally symetrical beings with three flexible tentacles for arms.  They evolved on a cold, heavy gravity world with a methane atmosphere, they are blue-grey in color.  Their eyes, mouths, and ears sprout from a fleshy mound atop the body.  A large Monarchy rules the kingdom with trade cartels controlling day to day interests.

Player 11 - The Kzinti Hegemony

Averaging over seven feet tall, the Kzinti are muscular felines that value military prowess, professionalism and personal agressiveness above all else. Always eager to prove these traits, they often jump into combat without thinking - and often find themselves in hopeless situations. Kzinti culture is chocked-full of very young (and very dead) heroes. With a vague similarity to the Lyrans, one sometimes wonders why they are not comrades in arms? Simple: Only one tiger to the hill.
